چکیده

[1] Lake sediment pore water has been proposed as a noble gas archive for paleoenvironmental reconstruction, but appropriate experimental techniques have not been available until recently. Here we present noble gas concentrations measured in the sediment pore water of Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan) which demonstrate for the first time the value of the sediment pore water archive for paleoclimate reconstruction. The noble gas profiles in the sediment indicate that the salinity of the lake water during the mid-Holocene was more than twice its present value of 6.0 g/kg, implying a 200-m lower lake level.

Dissolved noble gases in the porewater of lacustrine sediments as palaeolimnological proxies

This paper presents results from the numerical modelling of the transport of atmospheric noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe), tritiated water and He produced by radioactive decay of H, in unconsolidated lacustrine sediment. Two case studies are discussed: (1) the evolution of H and He concentrations in the sediment porewater of Lake Zug (Switzerland) from 1953 up to the present; and (2) the respon...

Analysis of dissolved noble gases in the porewater of lacustrine sediments

Here we present a new method for the sampling and quantitative extraction of dissolved He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe from lake sediment samples leading to determinations of porewater noble gas concentration profiles and the isotopic ratios 3He/4He, 20Ne/22Ne, and 40Ar/36Ar. Bulk sediment is transferred from a sediment core into standard Cu sample tubes without exposure to the atmosphere or other gas r...

Potentially Toxic Elements Contamination in Sediment, Surface and Pore water of Maharlu Saline Lake, South - West Iran

Maharlu Lake, located in the SW of Iran, has acted as a sink for various wastewater discharges in the last few decades. This study aimed at assessing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) distribution in sediment, surface and pore water samples of Maharlu Lake. To achieve that, the samples were collected from each compartment and the total concentration of PTEs (Al, Fe, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Sb, ...

Interpretation of dissolved atmospheric noble gases in natural waters

Several studies have used the temperature dependence of gas solubilities in water to derive paleotemperatures from noble gases in groundwaters. We present a general method to infer environmental parameters from concentrations of dissolved atmospheric noble gases in water. Our approach incorporates statistical methods to quantify uncertainties of the deduced parameter values. The equilibration t...

Optimization of a pressurization methodology for extracting pore-water.

Sediment toxicity can be assessed by conducting pore-water toxicity assays with standard water column organisms. Several methods have been developed for sampling pore-water. Centrifugation and pressurization methods are recommended when large volumes of pore-water are required to perform toxicity assays. Nevertheless, these methods involve sediment transportation and storage in laboratory, whic...
